VITEMA Urges Virgin Islands Residents to Prepare Now for Above-Normal 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season

June 2, 2025

ST. CROIX, V.I. – The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) is calling on all residents to prepare immediately for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1st. NOAA forecasters predict an above-normal season with 13-19 named storms, including 6-10 hurricanes and up to 5 major hurricanes.

"This forecast demands serious preparation from every household in our territory," said Director Jaschen. "We have enhanced warning systems this year that can provide up to 72 hours advance notice, but that extra time only helps if we're ready to act."

Every Family Must Have a Plan and Supplies

Essential preparations include:

  • Water: One gallon per person per day for seven days minimum
  • Non-perishable food for at least one week
  • Cash in small bills for when power is out
  • Fuel for vehicles and generators – fill up early
  • Generator safety: Never use indoors; keep 20 feet from buildings
  • Emergency kit: Flashlights, batteries, radio, medications, first aid supplies
  • Family communication plan with out-of-territory contact
